The time between fall and the snow is upon is, and we are embracing the present–for stewardship, for animals, and for enjoyment. As the nights get cooler and the mornings touched with frost, we’re keeping the heat on with our trail maintenance, as we prepare for winter and explorations of conservation area. Join us!

Stewardship
Late autumn is the ideal time to care for everything from trails to trees. Our Tuesday Trail Team is hard at work–as they are throughout the year–keeping clear our All Person’s Path at Westport Woods, working on new bridges at Herb Hadfield, and tackling invasive plants along the trails of our properties.
Learn more about stewardship on your own property with a Winter Tree Care Walk & Talk at Walt’s Farm on November 22
Wildlife
Fallen leaves and frost-bitten plants make it easier to spot a fox family or coyotes moving through the fields, or an opossum snacking on the last berries. We’re taking advantage of stick season’s bare branches to investigate animal life of autumn with our Evening Owl Prowl in late November, as well as a Winter Bird Feeder workshop for our feathered friends!
Autumn Fun
There is a bevy of fall fun to be had at WLCT properties in November. Our monthly Mid-Morning Story Hour (Leaf Man) and Social Hike (at Forge Pond) take place on the first Tuesday and the last Monday of the month, respectively. We are also hosting a Nature Holiday Card workshop for children, and our November Member Appreciation Program is an exploration of the secretive bog plants of Westport.
Join us for the return of stick season with these family-friendly programs. There are more programs on our website:
- Landscape Storytelling: Snapshot of a Property: Saturday Nov. 8
- Fall South Coast Stroll with the Watershed: Thursday Nov. 13
- Evening Owl Prowl: Monday Nov. 24
And, as always, we hope to see you on the trails!
The description “stick season” refers to the time of year after the leaves have fallen from the trees and comes to us from our neighbors from Vermont. Stick Season was made popular in a song by Noah Kahan.
