Westport’s glorious summer, full of cool waters, hot sands, happy cows, and beautiful fields, is also WLCT’s busiest time of year, with lots of visitors and necessary land stewardship during the growing season.
This summer, we managed to squeeze in some additional activities.
Land Preservation, Gardens & Trails
Foerver-Preserved Property
At the end of August, we closed on the remarkable Sodom Road Conservation Project, approximately 150 acres of undisturbed habitat and tributaries of the Adamsville Brook. Thanks to generous donors and community partners, this acquisition will expand publicly-accessible trails in the near future!
Gardens
Visitors to Westport Woods this summer have been delighted with the new gardens that wrap around Kirby House. Designed to draw people and pollinators in, the gardens have been a constant source of wonder for everyone who passes by. Keep on the lookout for more free public programs using the garden as our canvass!
New Trails
Early in the summer, we opened new trails at Westport Wood, adding almost 3 miles of varied terrain paths. We hope that the cooler weather of fall brings more folks out on this exciting new trail–just take it slow if it’s your first time.
Trail Team
Our amazing, all-volunteer Trail Team kept up their Tuesday schedule: working on the new trails at Westport Woods, maintaining the gardens at Kirby House (WLCT offices), building benches, and keeping trails and parking lots clear at our other public-access properties. We even managed to squeeze in a field trip with the group, to Mass Audubon’s Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary.
And More!
We’ve also hosted an Artist-in-Residence, 3 weeks of Town of Westport Recreation Department Nature Camp, Girl Scouts, toddlers, dog walkers and assorted amphibians!
