WLCT Big Day of Birding
Join birders around the world on October 12th!
Hosted by Cornell Ornithology, the Big Day of Birding is a global, biannual event to identify and record as many bird species as possible over the course of the day. Wherever you are, the Big Day is an opportunity to connect bird enthusiasts, and to raise awareness about bird conservation and protection of bird habitats.
Saturday October 12th
WLCT has 3 ways you can participate:
Join WLCT staff at Herb Hadfield (Cornell Road entrance) for hourly bird count walks start at 8, last walk at 11
register here or just show up!
Take a walk at another of WLCT’s public access properties and count on your own
Count in your own backyard–watching through your window also works!
download your Westport-specific bird checklist
Don’t forget to submit your data!
Log in to eBird.org and use the app to track your sightings in the moment or use a paper checklist and log on after you return home.
Signing up for an account is free and easy, and is a great way to connect with other birders and learn more about birds.
Print out and mark up a paper checklist while you are observing.
Drop off your checklist at Herb Hadfield/Cornell Road trailhead, at the Learning Center at Westport Woods or email them to us.
We’ll submit all collected lists through the WLCT ebird account.
However you choose to participate, your observations contribute to a better understanding of avian species in Westport and around the world. Ornithologists at Cornell Lab of Ornithology use citizen science data to conduct bird censuses, track migrations, and evaluate the diversity and health of the bird population over time.
Check out this useful guide that shows some of the many migrating warblers that will may their way through the South Coast this fall.
