Every year Westport Land Conservation Trust asks Board of Directors candidates to answer a few questions about their connection to Westport and land preservation. Please read below for 2025 Board candidate Don Swift’s responses.

“Westport, characterized by preserved & protected natural spaces and farmland and bordered by river and ocean, is unique.”

How did you get involved with WLCT?

Our family has a long history of involvement with land conservation in the communities where we have lived. When we arrived in Westport in 2016, we started to become acquainted with WLCT; we are grateful for its success and expanding land preservation efforts.

WLCT is among my all-time favorite organizations:  the team is so strong, the mission so clear and focused, and execution exceptionally efficient. I am retiring this summer and looking forward to more time in the woods and dirt while enjoying trail maintenance and stewardship!

Why do You support land conservation efforts in Westport?

The river, and its watershed, is so important to the whole town. I have a deep appreciation and concern for the health of the watershed. Supporting land stewardship is a logical piece of stewardship of the river.

We are so impressed with the efficacy of the WLCT which increases the desire to provide support to the mission and the organization.

Do you have a favorite place in Westport?

This question generates both a warm smile and a warm heart!

Just being in Westport is so different than other places, it makes me happy. I’m currently in South Carolina, and looking forward to being back in Westport soon.
