Getting Close: Exploring The Art and Technology of Macro Photography

Discover a whole new world of nature without ever leaving your backyard. Join Greg Stone, WLCT’s most featured photographer, whose photos have been used with articles in numerous national publications, such as Yankee, Horticulture, Popular Science, and The New York Times. Watch your photography skills and understanding reach a new level even with an old iPhone.

The first event will be held at Westport Woods on Saturday August 6th at 10am. Greg Stone will overview Macro Photography, the materials needed, and techniques used to enhance your subject and its background. After the first meeting, participants are encouraged to join a private Facebook group where they can post photos they took during the program and get feedback from Greg Stone. The second event, 2 weeks later, on Saturday August 20th from 8am-10am will be a field work day at Westport Woods where participants can refine their new skills. Greg Stone will be there to give feedback and advice.

Macro Photography definition:

“Macro photography” has a technical definition that most people – including camera manufacturers – ignore, and so will we. What “macro” has come to mean is simply the ability to explore nature up close – very close – with the camera – any camera. For some, this means taking revealing pictures of insects that look like creatures out of a science fiction movie – but only because most of us have not seen these amazing creatures up close. For others, it’s a great way to capture pictures of what we consider most beautiful – flowers and butterflies, for example – with details we never noticed before. In these two workshops, we will first explore how to get the most out of your existing camera equipment – as well as how you might enhance it in inexpensive ways. We’ll give you a couple of weeks to experiment on your own, then hold a field session. All participants will be encouraged to join a private Facebook Group where we can share our photos and perhaps get some helpful suggestions for improving them.
