Steward

WLCT takes an active and balanced approach to managing our properties for passive recreation and for wildlife habitat. We manage trails, parking areas and trail heads for safe and enjoyable public access. We also monitor, manage, and plan wildlife habitat improvement projects.

WLCT’s Land Stewardship focus is keeping our 11 public properties safe for visitors and ecologically healthy. Creating and maintaining trail networks to meet the needs of users comes first, followed by environmental work such as invasive plant removal and habitat restoration.

Land Stewardship starts in the acquisition process

As we consider land to be preserved, we look at the needs of the land and the wildlife that lives there. What is the extent of invasive material to be removed? Are there existing roads or trails with which wildlife is accustomed? How will we maintain the property into the future? Every property we own or conservation restriction we oversee has a management plan.

Stewardship focuses on these key elements:

  • Acquiring ecologically significant lands to help protect critical natural resources and help build wildlife corridors throughout the town
  • Planning and funding into the future by creating management plans and building the endowment
  • Focusing on access and safety for all visitors across our 11 publicly accessible properties
  • Managing lands through forestry, restoration and invasive species management
  • Maintaining an appreciation for the history of our lands, native, colonial, and ecological
  • Monitoring Conservation Restrictions to provide consistent oversight of the conservation values, develop relationships with landowners, and document changes to the land.
