Week of Thanks: Ann Squire

Currently a member of the Board of Directors, Ann’s previous commitments to WLCT include spearheading the creation of the Children’s Discovery Garden at Westport Woods, and serving on the Land Connections Committee.

Ann became convinced of WLCT’s positive impact during the building of Westport Woods. While the sale of the St Vincent de Paul camp property could have meant dozens of houses, the creation of a park that truly engages the community has been exciting–and demonstrates the community’s ability to preserve land and connect new generations to land conservation.

A Personal belief in Land Preservation

A 7th generation Westporter, Ann grew up surrounded by woods, fields, and open access to the water. Over the past decades, she has witnessed the river bank across from her home transform from tree-covered, dark and beautiful at night, to littered with lights. It convinced her that the community needs to preserve Westport’s habitats, and to bring people onto the land to connect with nature.

“My childhood experiences, and those of my children, compel me to try preserve as much as we can, and to work with kids and the community to instill a love of the land.”

What would you like to accomplish in the next few years?

Ann is convinced that younger people need to become aware of what the Land Trust does–and get involved! If that’s a concert in the summer or a lantern walk on the longest night, getting families to explore the natural world and connect with WLCT is so important.
